Singing Guide: Zero 7

Vocal technique, exercises, tips and relevant resources

Are you a beginner or advanced singer?

Want to sing like Zero 7? Then you need to cultivate their unique sound, which blends acoustic instruments, electronic beats, and soulful vocals. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Analyze your voice:

Firstly, you need to know what you have, what you can do with it, and what needs improvement. Take Singing Carrots' Vocal Range test to determine your range and compare it with that of Zero 7's vocalists (link in the tools section). You can then assess your pitch accuracy with the Pitch Accuracy test (also provided above) and start using the Visual Pitch Monitor to see your sung notes on a virtual keyboard while you practice.

  2. Voice type:

Understand your voice type and range (link in the articles section). Zero 7 often uses female vocalists with high, delicate voices, but they have also worked with male vocalists with deeper voices.

  3. Breathing basics and Breath support:

Practice breath control exercises, such as the Farinelli Breathing exercise (link in the skill-related videos section), which helps you control your breathing and produce long, supported phrases.

  4. Warm-up:

Sustain Vocal exercise and Humming exercise (both in the skill-related videos section) can improve your tone, help with pitch, and provide a solid foundation for your practice.

  5. Voice Registers:

Learn about voice registers (link in the articles section) and practice moving smoothly between chest and head voice. Try the Singing Comfort Zone exercise (link in the skill-related videos section) to help you transition between the registers seamlessly, avoiding vocal breaks and breathing constrictions.

  6. Chest Voice:

Mastering chest voice is essential to creating a rich, warm sound like Zero 7. Watch the Chest Voice Explained video (link in the skill-related videos section) and practice the Glottal Onset exercise (also in the skill-related videos section) to strengthen your chest voice and improve your vocal control.

  7. Mixed Voice:

Learn how to blend chest and head voice in your mix to create a unique sound. The Mixed Voice video (link in the skill-related videos section) provides more information on this technique.

  8. Twang and Vibrato:

Zero 7 uses "Twang" technique to get a sharper, more intense sound. The How to Twang Exercise (link in the skill-related videos section) offers a good starting point for applying this technique. Mastering Vibrato, on the other hand, adds emotion and movement to your vocals. The Beggars Bounce and Diaphragm Bounce videos (both in the skill-related videos section) can help you train your vibrato.

  9. Let Loose:

Zero 7 also uses vocal distortion and growling techniques on some tracks. Vocal Distortion & Growling article (link in the articles section) introduces these techniques. Experiment with them to add variety and expression to your vocals.

  10. Choose the songs:

Finally, to learn to sing like Zero 7, you should study their songs. Select songs that showcase the unique techniques discussed above and match your voice range. Check Singing Carrots' sung-by-artist feature to see which Zero 7 songs suit your vocal range (link in the tools section). The Songbook feature (also in the tools section) provides linked lyrics, sheet music, chords, karaoke, and YouTube audio for those song selections.

With these steps, you can sing like Zero 7 in no time. For more detailed information on each step, check out Singing Carrots' blog (link in the articles section) and their educational singing course (link in the tools section). Happy singing!
